Basic Allowance for Housing

The Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is a monthly stipend that can be used by servicemembers and their families to pay for housing. The amount of the stipend is determined by looking at a servicemember’s family status and their location of assignment.

BAH amounts will differ from state to state. For example, servicemembers in California are eligible for a higher BAH rate than servicemembers in Kansas. This is because the cost of living varies throughout the country.

BAH amounts will also differ with the servicemember’s family status. For instance, married servicemembers with children are eligible to collect more BAH than married servicemembers with no children. Single servicemembers are eligible for the minimum amount.

Servicemembers who live in free base housing are generally not eligible for BAH.
