Military commissaries, operated by The Defense Commissary Agency, are grocery stores that sell food, sundry and cleaning products for cost plus a 5 percent surcharge to active duty military, guard and reserve members, retirees and qualified family members. Commissaries are usually located on military installations and require shoppers to show proper military ID in order to qualify as authorized patrons. Shoppers can save an average of 30 percent on their purchases compared to commercial prices.
