GI Bill: Selected Reserve

Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) benefits may be available to members of the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. If you are eligible for MGIB-SR benefits, you can receive funding to pay for college degrees and vocational training programs.

Not all members of the Selected Reserve are eligible for GI benefits. If you are eligible, you can receive up to 36 months of education benefits. This would amount to $329 a month in funding. You must use your benefits within the 14 years after you become eligible for the program. If you became eligible for this program before October 1, 1992, you have 10 years to use your benefits.  If you are called to active duty, your eligibility may be extended to the amount of time you are mobilized plus an additional four months.

Am I Eligible?

To qualify for MGIB-SR benefits, you must meet these requirements:

  • Have a six-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve signed after June 30, 1985. If you are an officer, you must have agreed to serve six years in addition to your original obligation. For some types of training, it is necessary to have a six-year commitment that begins after September 30, 1990;
  • Complete your initial active duty for training (IADT);
  • Meet the requirement to receive a high school diploma or equivalency certificate before completing IADT. You may not use 12 hours toward a college degree to meet this requirement;
  • Remain in good standing while serving in an active Selected Reserve unit.

How to Apply

If you are eligible for GI Bill- Selected Reserve benefits, you will need to complete VA Form 22-1990, Application for Education Benefits.
