Yellow Ribbon Program

The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program is a provision of the Post 9/11 GI Bill. It is a voluntary program that enables schools to pay veteran tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate. Schools can contribute up to half of those expenses and the VA with match the amount.

Schools provide contributions to eligible individuals on a first come first served basis, and choose the amount they wish to give. Contributions are made in the form of a grant or scholarship.

Am I Eligible?

If you are entitled to the maximum Post 9/11 GI Bill benefit rate you can apply to receive this funding. You must:

  • Have served at least 36 months of active duty after September 10, 2001.
  • Have been honorably discharged.

You can also receive this benefit if you are a dependent eligible for Transfer of Entitlement. You can only receive this benefit if you are enrolled in an approved program offered by a participating school.  A list of schools participating in the yellow ribbon program can be found here.

How to Apply

If you are interested in applying for Yellow Ribbon Program benefits you will need fill out an application through the school you wish to attend. Schools determine how many students may participate in the program and how much funding they will provide. Remember that you must be eligible for full benefits under the Post 9/11 GI bill in order to apply.
